The volcanic Banda Islands rising from the sea

The Ring of Fire, properly understood

Our Expertise in Banda Sea Liveaboard

The Banda Sea is a 10 to 12 night expedition, not a week away — and the window that matters is narrow. We book it because we know which vessels and which dates actually deliver.

In short

Banda Sea liveaboard expeditions run 10 to 12 nights from Ambon or Maumere through the Forgotten Islands, and the best chance of encountering schooling hammerhead sharks in significant numbers is from mid-September to mid-October.

  • Hammerheads are generally present from September to the end of November
  • Upwellings cool the water in the peak window, which is what concentrates the pelagics
  • Nil Desperandum and Serua are the signature pinnacles, and both are advanced sites
  • Early booking is strongly recommended for the September–November dates

What we handle

Booking an expedition, not a week away

The dates that matter

We book against the hammerhead window rather than around it, because outside mid-September to mid-October the trip is a different trip.

Vessel selection

KLM Eliya, Ambai and Velocean each run the region differently. We match the vessel to how much of the trip is diving.

Route and crossings

Banda Sea to Raja Ampat in November, Ambon to Maumere through the Forgotten Islands, Komodo to Alor crossings in October.

Dive planning

Currents in the Banda Sea run mild to strong. We confirm certification levels against the sites on the itinerary before you commit.

How we book it

Why the lead time is so long

A small pool of vessels, a narrow window

Only a handful of liveaboards run the Banda Sea crossing series, and the September to November dates are the only ones most divers want. Advance booking of 18 to 24 months is recommended for peak-season hammerhead trips.

Early-bird discounts typically range from 10 to 20 percent for bookings made 12 to 18 months ahead, sometimes including complimentary nitrox or equipment rental.

  • KLM Eliya — comfortable vessels with experienced crews, 11-day expeditions and October crossing series
  • Ambai — luxurious extended trips of 12 nights through the Forgotten Islands
  • Velocean — the premium luxury segment, booked quickly during peak season

What the itineraries cover

Popular routes include Banda Sea to Raja Ampat in November, Ambon to Raja Ampat in November, and Komodo to Alor crossings, typically as 10 to 12 night expeditions.

Key sites across the region are Manuk Island, Banda Neira, Gunung Api, Nus Leur, Nil Desperandum and Karang Hatta — schooling hammerheads, pristine coral reefs and dramatic volcanic underwater landscapes.
