A Bali overnight yacht trip to Nusa Penida is the format most charter menus skip. You board in the afternoon from Serangan or Benoa harbour, cross the Badung Strait while the light is still good, and drop anchor in a sheltered bay off Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. Dinner is cooked and served on board. You sleep in a proper cabin on a quiet anchorage, and you are in the water at Manta Point shortly after sunrise, well before the first day boats from Sanur have even left the beach.
That timing is the whole point. On a standard day trip, the crossing eats four hours of your charter and you reach the manta cleaning stations at the same time as every speedboat operator in south Bali. A multi-day expedition east to Komodo solves that, but it asks for three to seven days and a different budget. The one-night-at-anchor charter sits between the two: roughly 24 hours on the water, one sunset and one sunrise, and exclusive access to the best hour of the day at Penida’s dive and snorkel sites, without committing to a week at sea.

How the Overnight Itinerary Runs
Exact timings shift with tide, season and the vessel’s cruising speed, but a typical one-night charter follows this shape:
- 14:00–15:00: Board at Serangan or Benoa. Safety briefing, welcome drinks, depart on the afternoon crossing (about 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on the boat).
- 16:30: First swim or snorkel stop, usually Crystal Bay or the Lembongan–Ceningan channel while the day traffic is thinning out.
- 18:00: Anchor for the night in a protected bay. Sunset on deck, dinner prepared by the crew.
- Overnight: Cabins made up, generator or battery power for air-conditioning depending on the vessel class.
- 05:45–06:15: Sunrise. Coffee, light breakfast, short repositioning to Manta Point or Manta Bay.
- 06:30–08:30: The reason you came: mantas at the cleaning stations in flat, empty water. Divers do one or two morning dives; snorkellers stay on the surface with a guide.
- 09:00–12:00: Second site (Gamat Bay, SD Point or Toyapakeh wall), then a full breakfast or brunch on the return crossing.
- 13:00–14:00: Back alongside in Serangan or Benoa.
Manta sightings are wildlife, not a scheduled show, and no operator can guarantee them. What the overnight format does guarantee is that you are at the site during the calmest, least crowded window, which is when encounters are statistically most likely and most relaxed.
What Is Included
Inclusions vary by vessel, which is why we always send a written specification before you commit. On most overnight charters we arrange, the rate covers:
- Private use of the vessel with full crew: captain, deckhand, and a cook or steward on larger boats
- All fuel for the published itinerary, anchorage and harbour fees
- Dinner, breakfast and drinking water; most crews also include soft drinks and fruit
- Snorkelling equipment, and kayaks or paddleboards where the vessel carries them
- Cabin linen and towels
- Nusa Penida marine conservation fees for all guests
Scuba diving is the most common add-on. We do not put unsupervised tanks on a charter boat; dives are run through licensed dive operators with certified divemasters, either hosted on board or meeting the yacht at the site. Vessel selection
We shortlist two or three boats that fit your group size, budget and comfort expectations. A sailing catamaran behaves very differently at anchor than a planing motor yacht, and we will tell you plainly which one suits a family with young children versus a group of certified divers. You see real photographs, cabin layouts and the full inclusion list before paying anything.
Dive supervision
For certified divers and first-timers alike, we book the morning dives through the group’s luxury diving desk, which works only with licensed operators and keeps guide-to-guest ratios small. Certification cards are checked at booking, not on the swim platform.
Land extensions
Some groups split: half stay with the boat, half want the clifftops. We can schedule a Nusa Penida land tour with a private driver to meet the yacht at Toyapakeh, cover Kelingking and Angel’s Billabong, and return the group to the boat for the crossing home.

Realistic Price Guidance
Prices below are indicative ranges for a one-night, roughly 24-hour private charter for the whole vessel, based on current market rates in south Bali. High season (July–August, Christmas–New Year) sits at the top of each range; shoulder season often prices 15–25 percent lower.

Budget separately for guided dives (roughly $90–$150 per diver for a two-dive morning including equipment), alcohol, and any land-tour extension. If a quote you receive elsewhere is dramatically below these ranges, ask what has been removed: it is usually crew size, insurance, or the overnight anchorage itself, with the “overnight” quietly redefined as a late return to port.
How to Book

- Review a written shortlist. Within one working day we send two or three vessel options with photographs, layouts, full inclusions and a total price. No surprises added at the harbour.
- Confirm with a deposit. A deposit secures the vessel and date; the balance is due before departure. We state the cancellation and weather policy in writing before you pay.
- We handle the rest. Transfers to the harbour, dive bookings, marine park fees, dietary notes to the crew, and a WhatsApp line to our desk throughout the trip.
One honesty note on weather: the Badung Strait is genuinely calm for most of the dry season (April–October). In the wet-season months, swells occasionally force a route change or a reschedule. A responsible captain makes that call, and we back the captain every time. We would rather move your date than sell you a rough night at anchor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a certified diver to join the sunrise manta session?
No. Manta Point works well as a snorkel site because the mantas feed and clean near the surface. Snorkellers enter with a guide while certified divers go deeper along the cleaning stations. First-timers can arrange an introductory dive with an instructor through our diving desk, subject to a medical questionnaire.
When is the best time of year for an overnight charter to Nusa Penida?
April through October brings the flattest crossings and best visibility. Reef mantas are resident at Penida year-round, so sightings happen in every month. If you are hoping for the mola mola (oceanic sunfish), the cool-water window from roughly July to October is the realistic season, and that is a diving encounter rather than a snorkelling one.
Will I sleep comfortably at anchor?
In dry season, the standard anchorages off Lembongan and in Crystal Bay are well protected and most guests sleep better than they expect. Catamarans are the steadiest platform at anchor; monohull sailing yachts move more. If anyone in your group is prone to motion sickness, tell us: it changes which boat we recommend, and simple measures like taking medication before the afternoon crossing solve most cases.
Can we combine the boat with a land tour of the island?
Yes. The usual pattern is a morning in the water, then a private driver collects part or all of the group at Toyapakeh harbour for Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong before rejoining the boat. It makes for a long day, so we normally suggest it for the second day, after the sunrise swim.
How far ahead should we book?
For July, August or the Christmas period, four to eight weeks ahead gives you a genuine choice of vessels. Outside peak season, one to two weeks is usually enough, and we can occasionally place a charter within 48 hours if a suitable boat is free, so it is worth a message even last-minute.
Can this trip be extended toward Komodo?
Not on the same vessel in one night: Komodo is a separate multi-day itinerary departing from Labuan Bajo, about a one-hour flight from Bali. What we can do is plan both: the Penida overnight as your first night aboard, then a two-to-five-day Komodo charter with our sister fleet desk later in the same holiday. Many clients use the Penida trip exactly this way, as a low-commitment test of life at anchor.
