Conditions
The Banda Sea experiences two primary diving seasons, dictated by the monsoons. The eastern monsoon (dry season) typically runs from April to November, bringing calm seas and excellent visibility, particularly in the northern and central parts of the region.
The western monsoon (wet season) from December to March can bring stronger winds and rougher conditions, though diving is still possible in more sheltered areas.
The Banda Sea's dive conditions are largely influenced by its oceanic nature. Being a deep basin connected to the Pacific and Indian Oceans, it experiences significant upwellings, especially during certain times of the year.
Those upwellings are the whole mechanism behind the hammerhead window: cooler water concentrates the pelagics around the isolated pinnacles.
Mid-September to mid-October: water temperatures are at their coolest, typically ranging from 24 to 27 °C (75 to 81 °F). Visibility during this period is generally excellent, often exceeding 20 to 30 metres (65 to 100 feet).
Other months (April to August, November): temperatures are slightly warmer, averaging 27 to 29 °C (81 to 84 °F), with visibility remaining consistently good, usually 15 to 25 metres (50 to 80 feet).
Currents in the Banda Sea can vary from mild to strong, depending on the site and tidal movements.

The best chance for encountering these magnificent creatures is from mid-September to mid-October, coinciding with cooler water temperatures due to upwellings. Hammerheads are generally present from September to the end of November.
