Why the pinnacles work

Isolated pinnacles act as magnets

The region features isolated pinnacles that act as magnets for large schools of fish and their predators, making them prime locations for schooling hammerhead shark sightings. Peak season runs mid-September through mid-October.

Nil Desperandum, meaning "never despair", lives up to its name by offering some of the most thrilling hammerhead encounters. Divers need advanced skills due to strong currents.

Serua is another volcanic pinnacle featuring schooling hammerheads, particularly during the September to November window, plus mobula rays and reef sharks.

The sites

What each one is actually like

The Forgotten Islands: Ring of Fire dive sites

A remote archipelago offering pristine and largely untouched dive sites, with volcanic activity and deep trenches.

Multiple sites near Damar, Teun and Nila carry minimal human impact — the reason the reefs are in the condition they are.

Manuk Island: the snake volcano

An active volcano, famous for its numerous sea snakes — yellow-lipped sea kraits, which are often seen hunting among the reefs.

It is one of the few sites in Indonesia where the snakes, rather than the sharks, are what divers remember.

Ambon and the Banda Islands: macro and history

Ambon Bay is a premier muck diving destination, featuring rare and unusual critters including frogfish, Rhinopias scorpionfish, flamboyant cuttlefish, mimic octopuses, and various nudibranchs.

Banda Neira combines history with healthy reef diving through volcanic lava formations.
