A multi-day expedition, not a boat trip

Bali to Komodo Private Yacht Charter (Multi-Day Expedition)

A Bali to Komodo private yacht charter is a multi-day expedition rather than a boat trip: typically five to nine nights sailing east from Bali along Lombok and Sumbawa and into Komodo National Park aboard a fully crewed private yacht or luxury phinisi.

The route

What five to nine nights covers

Bali to Labuan Bajo is roughly 250 nautical miles by sea. Expedition vessels break the crossing into day hops and the occasional overnight passage, so the pace is set by how many nights you have, not by how fast the boat can run.

Komodo National Park is the reason many charterers choose this route at all: current-swept channels, manta aggregation sites, and reef walls that reward both experienced divers and confident snorkelers.

The route

How many nights you actually need

LengthWhat it coversSuits
5–6 nightsOne-way Bali to Labuan Bajo with select stops, fly back to Bali (about 50 minutes)Tighter schedules, first crossings
7–8 nightsOne-way with full Lombok and Sumbawa stops plus three full days inside the parkMost parties, especially divers
9+ nightsRound trip, or extended park time south toward Horseshoe BaySlow travel, photography, repeat guests

As a working illustration, not a quotation: a seven-night VIP-class charter at USD 5,500 per day comes to USD 38,500 in charter fee. Add Indonesian VAT and an APA of around 30 percent, and the all-in figure lands in the mid USD 50,000s for the whole vessel — often eight to twelve guests, which puts the per-person cost of a week-long private expedition below many land-based luxury itineraries of similar length.

What is included — and what APA covers

The day rate, and the expedition float

The day rate buys

  • Exclusive use of the vessel with its full professional crew
  • Captain, chef and stewards
  • A cruise director or guide on most vessels in these classes, who handles daily planning and park logistics
  • The dive operation, on dive-capable vessels

APA covers

  • Fuel for the routing you actually sail
  • Komodo National Park entrance, trekking, and ranger fees
  • Food and beverage provisioning to your menu
  • Port, harbor, and clearance charges along the route

The APA is an expedition float, typically 25–35 percent of the charter fee, paid before departure and spent on your behalf on the trip’s variable costs. It is accounted against receipts, and any unspent balance is returned after the trip.

How to book

Five steps to cast-off

The VIP class covers modern liveaboards and refined phinisi with en-suite cabins, generous deck space, and crews experienced on the Bali–Komodo run. The VVIP class moves into larger yachts and flagship phinisi: higher crew-to-guest ratios, more elaborate galleys and menus, jacuzzis and expansive owner’s suites on some vessels.

  4. Work through the detail

In the weeks before departure we work through menus, day-by-day routing, park permits, and any special arrangements.

  5. Board at Benoa or Serangan

Board at Benoa or Serangan; the crew and desk handle everything after that.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights do I really need for Bali to Komodo?

Five nights is the sensible minimum for a one-way crossing with a meaningful stay in the park. Seven to eight nights is the sweet spot: unhurried Lombok and Sumbawa stops plus three full days among the islands of Komodo. Nine or more suits round trips or divers who want the park’s southern sites.

Can we sail one way and fly back?

Yes, and most parties do. Labuan Bajo’s airport has multiple daily flights to Bali taking about 50 minutes. One-way charters sometimes carry a repositioning element in the price, which we confirm per vessel before you commit.

What exactly is the APA, and do I get unspent money back?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance, typically 25–35 percent of the charter fee, is paid before departure and covers fuel, park and ranger fees, food and drink, and port charges. It is accounted against receipts, and any unspent balance is returned after the trip.

When is the best season for this route?

The dry season, roughly April through November, offers the calmest crossings and the most reliable conditions in the park. The route can run outside those months, but January and February bring less predictable seas on the open-water legs, so we plan more conservative routings then.

Is the charter fully private?

Yes. You take the entire vessel — cabins, decks, crew, and itinerary are yours alone. There are no shared departures in the VIP and VVIP classes; the day rate is for the boat, not per person.

Do non-divers get less out of the trip?

No. Trekking with rangers to see Komodo dragons, the Padar viewpoint, pink-sand beaches, kayaking, and snorkeling with mantas and turtles are all surface-level.
