The sea is calmest before the daytime wind builds, snorkeling visibility peaks, and you clear exposed sections, such as the Badung Strait crossing to Nusa Penida, before the midday chop arrives. If your day involves a crossing, swimming, or photography, treat the early alarm as part of the price.
Afternoons have one job: the sunset cruise. From about 4:30 pm the wind that built through the day starts to ease, and a slow cruise along the Benoa and Serangan coastline into golden light is a different product from a day at sea. For everything else, go early, and choose a weekday too: harbours are quieter and boarding is faster.

In the Badung Strait, afternoon wind against the current stands the water into short, steep waves that make a fast boat slam rather than glide. A morning crossing takes 45 minutes to an hour; the same route at 2:30 pm can feel twice as long.

7:00 to 11:00 am: The Prime Window
Water is flattest and clearest, marine life feeds in the cooler hours, and time on deck feels pleasant. If mantas or reef snorkeling are the point of your trip, this window is the trip.
11:00 am to 3:00 pm: The Working Middle
The breeze is up and the chop follows. Not dangerous on a well-run charter, but a poor time for a long crossing or snorkeling photos. Good itineraries use these hours for a sheltered bay, a slow coastal cruise, or a long lunch at anchor.
4:00 pm to Sunset: The Golden Window

Weekdays Beat Weekends at the Dock
Benoa and Serangan serve private charters, fast boats to the Nusa islands, dive operators, and a heavy weekend crowd. On Saturdays and Sundays the pontoons queue; on a Tuesday you walk down, board, and go. Harbour traffic also thickens after 8:00 am on weekends, so a weekday pickup at 6:45 am often saves 20 to 30 minutes each way, and Lembongan’s snorkel sites carry fewer boats midweek.
