Labuan Bajo, gateway to Komodo National Park, is a direct flight of 60 to 75 minutes from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) to Komodo Airport (LBJ), with morning departures daily and a 10–15 minute drive from the terminal to the harbour where your tender waits. Sorong, gateway to Raja Ampat, is different: there are no direct flights from Bali, so you connect through Makassar or Jakarta, usually on an overnight itinerary landing in Sorong around dawn, exactly when Raja Ampat charter yachts prefer to board guests.

Airlines, flight times, and fares
The DPS–LBJ route is one of Bali’s busiest domestic corridors, served by Batik Air, Citilink, Super Air Jet, AirAsia Indonesia, and Wings Air’s ATR 72 turboprops. A morning departure between 6:00 and 11:00 is almost always available; the flight takes about an hour, a little more on the turboprop. One-way fares run roughly IDR 800,000 to 2,500,000 (USD 50–160). Peak months, July, August, and Christmas–New Year, sell out earliest, so book as soon as your embarkation date is fixed.
From Komodo Airport to your tender
Komodo Airport sits practically inside town: the drive to the harbour or marina takes 10 to 15 minutes. When we arrange a charter, a driver meets you at arrivals and the crew is told your actual landing time, not your scheduled one, so the tender is alongside when you reach the jetty. Morning flight or the night before?
For a day trip or noon boarding, the earliest morning flight works fine. For a multi-day itinerary, fly in the evening before, or take the first departure: afternoon flights face more delays. A yacht sailing at 9:00 reaches the central anchorages by early afternoon; miss the morning and you lose the first day of the itinerary you paid for. A hotel night in Labuan Bajo is cheap insurance.
Bali to Sorong: the overnight run to Raja Ampat
How the connection works
Sorong’s Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) is served from Jakarta and Makassar, not Bali directly. The common pattern is a late-evening departure to Makassar (about 1 hour 20 minutes), a layover of one to three hours, then a roughly two-hour sector to Sorong, landing around 5:00–7:00 local time. Garuda Indonesia and the Lion Air group carriers have historically flown these legs; door to door, expect six to nine hours elapsed. Bali sits on UTC+8, Sorong on UTC+9, so you lose an hour flying east.
Why a dawn landing suits a charter
The night is short, but the schedule suits how Raja Ampat charters operate. SOQ is compact and bags come out quickly; the drive to Sorong harbour takes about 15–20 minutes. Most private charters board guests at the harbour mid-morning and cross toward Dampier Strait and Waigeo the same day, so you sleep off the red-eye on deck while the yacht works. Some itineraries begin in Waisai instead, adding a two-hour ferry; ours normally pick up at Sorong harbour directly.
Booking the Sorong legs sensibly
Book Bali–Sorong as a single ticket where offered, so a delayed first leg becomes the airline’s problem, not yours. Raja Ampat season (roughly October–April) means fuller flights, so reserve early. For a significant commitment, add a buffer: an overnight in Sorong, or at least a morning boarding rather than a tight same-hour connection.

Practical details worth planning around
- Baggage: domestic carriers typically include ~20 kg checked on full-service fares, less on low-cost tickets, with ~7 kg cabin allowance. Soft duffels stow better aboard a yacht than hard shells.
- Delay buffers: build slack on the return too. The last flights out of Labuan Bajo typically leave mid-to-late afternoon, so avoid a same-evening international departure without a generous margin.
- Weather season: December–February brings more afternoon disruption on the Labuan Bajo route; morning flights are the reliable ones year-round.
- Coordination: give whoever arranges your charter your flight numbers, not just your dates, so the tender and welcome adjust without you asking.
Or skip the airport altogether
There is one route to Komodo with no boarding pass at all: sailing there.
